Hotjar alternative: test your site with an AI agent, no traffic or tracking code needed

As read on 6 October 2026, hotjar.com redirects to Contentsquare, and new Hotjar users sign up on Contentsquare instead. If you want heatmaps and replays of your real visitors, that is still the category to compare. If you have little traffic, or want to know why a step fails, Jenna is an AI agent that uses your site in a real browser and shows you where she gets stuck.

Third-party facts on this page were read on Hotjar's and Contentsquare's own sites on 6 October 2026. Contentsquare prices are shown as displayed from a French connection, in euros. Jenna pack prices exclude VAT.

What happened to Hotjar?

Hotjar is now part of Contentsquare. When we checked on 6 October 2026, hotjar.com redirected to a Contentsquare page headed "You're in the right place. Hotjar is now Contentsquare.", which also said: "It's no longer possible to create a new account on Hotjar." Existing Hotjar users still get a login link. So comparing Hotjar today means comparing Contentsquare's plans.

Two ways to find where visitors struggle

Hotjar and Jenna have the same goal, finding where people struggle on your site, but they work in opposite ways.

1. Record your real visitors

You add a tracking tag to your site, and the tool records what visitors do: session replays, heatmaps, funnels and surveys. Contentsquare describes itself as "an experience analytics platform that helps you understand what your users are doing on your website or app — and why. It includes heatmaps, session replay, surveys, error monitoring, funnel analysis, and AI-powered insights, all in one place." Other session-replay and heatmap tools follow the same model: the data comes from the visitors you already have.

2. Send an agent

You give Jenna an address and a goal in plain language, for example "find a pair of running shoes in size 42 and reach the payment step". She opens a real browser in the cloud, reads, clicks, fills in forms, accepts cookies, makes mistakes and corrects them, just like a first-time visitor. Then she tells you whether she got there, and where she got stuck if she didn't. No visitor needs to have come first.

When Contentsquare (ex-Hotjar) is the better choice

If you already have real traffic and want to see what real customers do at volume, a session-replay tool is the right fit, and Contentsquare is where Hotjar users now land. Their pages list what that model gives you:

  • Real visitors at scale: replays of real customer sessions, and "Heatmaps + Attention Maps: See where users click, hover, and scroll".
  • The voice of your customers: surveys and feedback widgets, to "Capture the voice of your customers at scale."
  • Human participants: interviews and unmoderated user tests, including recruitment from their participant pool. For a panel-first tool, see our UserTesting alternative.
  • Error and performance monitoring: "Catch JavaScript errors before they kill your conversions", and how "slow load times affect behaviour and revenue".
  • Funnels and journey analysis on real traffic, with "Impact quantification" on the Growth plan.
  • Mobile apps as well as websites.
  • Integrations: "Connect Slack, Jira, Unbounce, and more — included in the free plan." Jenna has no integrations beyond her REST API and machine-readable guide.

When an AI agent like Jenna is the better choice

An AI agent like Jenna fits when there is nobody to record yet, or when you want to be told what went wrong at each step. That is the idea behind an AI UX audit:

  • Little or no traffic. A new store, a site before launch, a B2B site with a few visits a day. Recording tools need visitors to record; Jenna is the visitor.
  • You want the reason, not only the drop-off. In audit mode, every step comes with what she was trying to do, what blocked her and the fix she recommends.
  • You can't or won't add a tracking tag. Nothing is installed on the site. She works whatever the site is built on: PrestaShop, WooCommerce, Shopify, Wix or custom code. One exception: if the site's bot protection refuses her first request, the run reports that as a block on our side, not as a finding about your site.
  • You need proof someone else can open. Each completed run comes with a public link to the video, the step-by-step log with a screenshot at each step, and the verdict, with no account needed. For agencies, these are share links your clients open without an account. Reports and videos can also be printed and downloaded.
  • You run an online store. Jenna goes as far as the payment step without placing a real order, and you can stop the journey at any step. After you change your theme or a plugin, replay the journey of a successful run to check it still works: a replay runs without the AI model, faster and cheaper than the first run. See the CRO audit for online stores.
  • You pay as you go. Packs never expire and are shared across your projects. Only browser time is billed.

Can I get alerted when something on my site changes?

Yes. Each project has a Monitoring switch. When it's on, Jenna rechecks the project's pages on a schedule and e-mails you when they change. The check and the alert use no minutes. On the Autopilot subscription, a detected change can also trigger an automatic rerun, which does use minutes. To go further, automate a journey and get alerted when it breaks.

Using both

You don't have to choose. Record real visitors where you have traffic, to see patterns across many sessions. Send Jenna before a launch, after each update, or when one step keeps losing people and you want to watch someone go through it and explain why. The recording tool tells you where real people drop out; Jenna's run shows one first-time visit through that step and, in audit mode, the problem and a suggested fix.

Pricing compared

Hotjar pricing now lives on Contentsquare's pricing page: hotjar.com/pricing redirects there. The two products bill different things, so compare the unit before the amount.

Contentsquare

Prices read on 6 October 2026 from a French connection, in euros.

  • Experience Analytics Free: "€0", "200k monthly sessions", "1 project", "Replays, Heatmaps + Funnels". Replays are a separate, fixed monthly allowance.
  • Experience Analytics Growth: from "€49" paying monthly, or "€39" billed annually, "From 7k monthly sessions". Price rises with the number of monthly sessions.
  • Every new account starts with a 15-day free trial of the Growth plans, with "no auto-charges" and no payment details.
  • Their FAQ says UK customers are billed in euros and customers outside Europe in US dollars. We did not read the dollar prices, so we don't quote them.

Jenna

Pack prices exclude VAT; see pricing.

  • 120 free minutes at sign-up, no card, about one full audit.

  • Autopilot: €29/month with 725 minutes each billing cycle, plus scheduled routines, an automatic rerun when monitoring detects a change, and encrypted credentials for journeys behind a login. Cancel any time.

FAQ

What happened to Hotjar?

Hotjar is now part of Contentsquare. On 6 October 2026, hotjar.com redirected to Contentsquare, whose page said "It's no longer possible to create a new account on Hotjar." Existing Hotjar users still have a login.

Can I still sign up for Hotjar?

No, not as a new user. As read on 6 October 2026, new users sign up on Contentsquare instead; existing Hotjar accounts keep a login link.

Is there a free Hotjar alternative?

Contentsquare's Experience Analytics Free plan showed "€0", "200k monthly sessions" and "Replays, Heatmaps + Funnels" when we read it on 6 October 2026; replays are a separate, fixed monthly allowance. Jenna gives you 120 free minutes at sign-up, with no card, which is about one full audit of your site.

What is the best Hotjar alternative?

If you have little traffic, an AI agent that visits your site and reports where it blocks, like Jenna, can show you problems before any visitor arrives. If you have steady traffic and want to watch real visitors, a session-replay and heatmap tool fits better. There is no single best one: it depends on whether you have visitors to record.

Does Jenna replace Hotjar or Contentsquare?

No. Jenna does not record your real visitors, and has no heatmaps or surveys. She is the visitor: she uses your site with a goal you set and tells you what happened. You can use a recording tool for real traffic and Jenna before launches and after updates.

Do I need to install a tracking code to use Jenna?

No. Nothing is installed on your site: no script, no module, no back-office or hosting access. You only need a Jenna account, the site's address and a goal.

Can an AI test my website instead of real users?

Yes. Jenna is an AI agent that uses your website in a real browser on your behalf. Give her an address and a goal, and she returns the narrated video, the step-by-step log and the verdict. You can pick a persona (Novice, Expert or Administrator); there are no human participants, so she does not replace interviews with your customers. See the AI UX audit.

How much does Jenna cost compared with Contentsquare?

They bill different units. Contentsquare's Experience Analytics bills by monthly sessions, with Growth from €49 a month (€39 billed annually), as read on 6 October 2026. Jenna bills browser minutes: packs from €5 for 120 minutes, excluding VAT, that never expire, or Autopilot at €29/month with 725 minutes.
